Personality:

Minato is a quiet boy, which is evident even in the choices of dialogue that you can pick for him as a silent protagonist, he remains a character of few words. His default position is to slouch, have his hands in his pockets, facing downwards with his long bangs covering half his face, and tuning out noise around him with the music from his mp3 player. He seems to be off into his own world, and even when trying to grab his attention, he sometimes doesn't notice, or gives a look of dull surprise, before asking the other person to repeat themselves. Really it's only due to the dramatic circumstances of his Persona-summoning ability that Minato is practically forced into interactions with others. Left to his own devices, Minato doesn't make much of a fuss about anything, and truth be told, might have spent most of the school year alone, as he usually had in the previous years of his life. It's not so much that he's shy, it's just that he isn't very good at associating with people; and he's probably aware of it, too, so he didn't care to try.

Only answering when directly addressed, he's more of a listener and reactor rather than bringing up his own ideas. And even then, he doesn't always read the atmosphere well. His voice defaults to a deadpan tone, which makes it sound a lot like he isn't really interested, or it could be blunt remarks. Other times he says something strange that seems to branch far off from the point of the original context, or what sounds like a joke that's said so seriously even his friends can't really tell if he really is serious or not. In Persona Q, some of his party members criticize how in the clouds his head seems to be and that they can't really get a clear read how he's feeling. (So, aside from normally keeping to himself to begin with, he also sometimes just elects to be weird. That's a thing!) But he never seems to be a malicious person in his interactions with others--not intentionally.

It isn't really something he actively thinks about, but when with friends or "Social Links", Minato changes a lot depending on who he's talking to. He often says what they want to hear, rather than his own view on the matter. This might have to do with the lukewarm to negative reception to whenever he blurts out his honest thoughts, as noted above. He's very good at reading others, despite his less-than-stellar socialization skills early on in the game. He makes a habit of being taken into the flow of others' pace, leaving him to have less of a personality purely "as himself". While this may have the alarming implication that he has multiple fake faces to show, one thing remains consistent throughout them: Minato is a sympathetic person who will always be willing to lend an ear, and give thoughtful advice in return, and isn't judgmental of the person who seems in need of company. As far as he's concerned, it's their own comfort and happiness first and his later. His adaptability may or may not be a good thing; at best, it's an active mechanism to avoid rejection and earn approval, at worst, he loses his voice to echo the whims of how the other person is feeling.

Romantically, he's in somewhat an odd spot. He has the unfortunate tendency to have female friends fall in love with him at the latter point of their Social Links likely due to his considerate nature (and probably his face too, idk)
, and he is unable to keep it on a level where they're just platonically close. This will be interpreted as him being so uncertain about spurning advances, that this too, ends up where he "goes with the flow". He can be oblivious, spending time with other girls which makes the ones interested in him seethe in low-key suspicion and jealousy, only noticing once he's confronted about it. This is played out in one Drama CD track, where a party member criticizes him for his womanizing and 'casting his net too wide', which he responds to with only a confused "Huh?" For all his good at reading others, he's just bad at it in the context of love. (It's not relevant right now, but if he gets canon updated, he'll be played as if he wasn't dating anyone and it never extended past one-sided crushes.)

He seems to be consistently lethargic and drowsy, which aside from being a gameplay trait that lets him sleep during class, is a running (leaning?) gag in the manga. Oftentimes he can be seen dozing off, and in general treats many things he doesn't care about too much with minimal effort to conserve energy. He likes napping in itself (and often thinks "I want to sleep"), so it's not something unconscious on his part (HASorry I'll be serious now). But if it's actually something that he's interested in, he can be pretty good or enthusiastic about it. When push comes to shove, Minato can excel. It could be attributed to his apathy early on, that he did not spread out and try things that he could potentially like. And when he found them, he finds that there was a lot that he missed out on, if only he had been more open about these things earlier... But he never really loses his fondness for naps or the avoidance of things he generally considers too troublesome; he has friends who choose to be amused at his attitude rather than exasperated about it. Don't get between an Arisato and his naptime! Or well, you can. He won't be too mad about it anyway, just spaced out.

His gameplay mechanics aside from battle stats are the ones that he needs in everyday life: Academics, Charm, and Courage. Early on, he's unremarkable; in order, he's in the category Slacker, Plain, and Timid. The player nurtures each of these traits to make Minato a character who is among the top students in school, and expands the ways that he can talk to people and handle situations with options that are otherwise locked or rendered ineffective due to insufficient character growth. At its best, Minato has the potential to become the best student grades-wise in his school year, extremely popular even with those he doesn't personally know, and to be brave enough to keep firm no matter how daunting the situation. Once he puts the work into it, he can achieve a lot of things, emanating a cool, composed aura that others can admire, rather than that former teenager that simply didn't care about his surroundings or his standing in relation to anyone else.

Because of the lack of fear he had when he first encountered the Shadows, his special trait that allows him to use multiple Personas, and his ability to make quick and calm decisions, his upperclassman Mitsuru, official head of S.E.E.S., put him in charge of the team in field combat. Here he not only extends his leadership in Tartarus, but also calls the shots when they actually go out to train, and he has to remain watchful of everyone's condition. He's not a bad leader, in fact he's probably a dang good one considering they continue to rely on him. Battling the Shadows gave Minato a purpose, which he was lacking as he drifted from caretaker to caretaker while not having real family or close companions. This may be partially why he took the offer to join them so fast, aside from that he had nothing better to really do about his ability. He takes into account everyone's aptitude, availability, and even manages their funds and equipment. It can't be said he isn't a thoughtful leader. "Leader" even becomes his de facto nickname, in the Drama CD's, even extending to friends who didn't know that it started out within a very specific fighting-off-evil context.

He's always been close to the concept and idea of death ever since his parents' passing, which makes him contemplative. All the years practically alone seemed to have dulled his own reaction to such things; it became just a thing that was part of the cycle, the destination at the end of anyone's road as it really was, factually. But as he had finally come to know people in a closer way, he realized that meaning of "loss". He wasn't the one to cry, but he actually felt it too, seeing the others do. Along the lines of "Ah, so that's the feeling that I also had, ten years ago". He muses to himself, and he learns. Therein he offers comfort to others, a shoulder to lean or cry on, silent company, if they want it. But he doesn't once talk about himself. While there for others a lot of the time, he's become far too used to dealing with his issues on his own that confiding in others would frankly feel unnatural. It's sadly, not an uncommon problem among S.E.E.S. Given the choice of sharing his troubles with someone else, and perhaps even when being pressed about it, Minato would keep it inside, and do his best to have it hidden away as if everything was normal, up to the toll that everything is taking on him, despite his improved life outlook. Even those closest to him hear no peep of complaint.

At his core, Minato really is a genuinely kindhearted person. Regardless of how his earliest intents are interpreted (if he was lonely himself, if he needed the Social Links' powers, etc.), when he comes to be depended on by someone he takes it very seriously, and sticks through with his friends in good times and bad. He doesn't discriminate, and when seeing someone in need he can't very well be asked to abandon them. Many times, more often than not, the compassionate nature in him reaches out, he can't leave it as none of his business. In the multitude of people, he connects deepest to those alone and in need of a friend. Whereas he feels uncomfortable and acts colder in crowded settings, when it's only the two of them, while not necessarily louder, he is definitely warmer. Here he can listen, hear himself think, and give the best advice that he is able to offer; while very awkward about it (because physical affection is a whole new obstacle...) in extremely rare instances Minato can even close in the distance, and give the other a hug.

In the course of one school year, through many joys and perhaps--ironically--even more tragedies, Minato goes from not caring much about anything, to loving the concept of life in itself, and how precious and fragile it all is. Identities, insecurities, bonds with others, experiences good and bad, the uncertain future tomorrow brings. His determination and growth as a person makes him take the greatest sacrifice, all so that the world could go on living. The world would never know what he and his friends did to save it, but he was content knowing that it was now going to be alright. And still, while now no longer looking at it through the lens of apathy, he wasn't afraid to die, cherishing the time he did have. He could close his eyes in peace and truly believe;

That life--his life, his journey... was a worthwhile adventure.

And so... there are many things elaborated above that he could be, but he currently isn't.

Due to his very early canon point Minato is before his character development that brings him to make meaningful bonds with others, and before he comes into contact with complex, heavily emotional situations. He's still mostly the distant and apathetic boy from the start of the story, unsure with how to deal with most things. The reason for choosing this is simply, that it would be nice to see how his development would play out in Crystallis itself, being pushed into protecting a foreign world while not being an overtly caring person, rather than the blatantly and doubtlessly heroic leader and world-savior that can be seen later in the game. His potential is already known by those who know how his canonical song and dance go; but here, it would unfold in a different way, through a different tale. There's always the possibility for canon updating later should plans change; but for now, he's dazed, confused, a bit lazy, and will probably answer questions about his opinions with "Whatever".

And then, it happened! Being apped back in with a change in canonpoint; Minato now has a deep sense of responsibility and has made fulfilling, deep Social Links. However, the weight of past failures and the loss of friends are brought along with him. Ultimately, there isn't a huge change compared to how much he has already grown in Melodies, but he will now reminisce about responsibilities back home, rather than never having minded being ripped from it. He's also not too fond of the fact that he has to stop the apocalypse here, while uncertain of the fate of the world back home against Nyx. His Moogle Kharon will, eventually, enlighten him how he doesn't have to worry about having lost that battle; the price paid is a different one.

I took a nap up a tree, and now there's... a hamster down there eyeing me. It's not leaving.

Does anyone know when they go to sleep? I can just stay up here until it goes away but it's nice to have a time to wait for/expect it to go away.

If I don't take another nap I'm alright with exchanging letters how your day's going. ... I'm kinda bored and might be here a while. Might just let Kharon go have a fun evening while I'm stuck but he won't have any of it, so try convincing him if he's still around when you're reading this.

Crystallis
Moogle Name: Kharon

Moogle Gender: Male
First Job: Summoner
Second Job: Black Mage
Limit Break: Messiah - Emulating the evoker gun he had in canon, from his bare hands an arrow of light manifests and pierces through the side of his head. Then, a tall white spirit manifests from the shining shards of Minato's psyche.
- If at least one member of his party is dead, it resurrects them into a critical state w/o exhaustion, and heals Minato himself to half HP with a Sentinel effect. For the next 7 minutes, attacks targeted at other allies will feel painless and hurt Minato instead (also shown by deterioration and cracking of stone on the statue-like spirit figure, group damage will stack); and if he dies, the crumbled remains of Messiah become an outer Reflect barrier, and an inner
Shell+Protect buff on each of his allies.
- If no one is dead or Minato is alone, it instead does a high amount of Holy magic damage to all enemies, then disappears.
